Can students bring spouse to Australia?

Yes, students can bring their spouse (partner) and dependent children with them to Australia while studying, provided they meet certain requirements.

Here’s how it works:

1. Dependent Visa (Subsequent Entrant)

- When applying for an Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500), students can include their spouse and dependent children in their original application as dependents.
- If not included initially, dependents can apply later as “subsequent entrants” once the student visa is granted.

2. Eligibility

- The main applicant (student) must hold a valid student visa.
- The spouse/partner must be legally married or in a de facto relationship with the student.
- Evidence of relationship (marriage certificate, joint bank accounts, photos, etc.) is required.
- Dependent children must be under 18 (except in exceptional circumstances).

3. Visa Fees (Effective 1st July 2025)

- Main student applicant: AUD 2,000
- Spouse/partner: AUD 1,225
- Each dependent child: AUD 400

4. Financial Requirements

- You must show evidence of funds to cover living expenses for all members:
- For students (2025): AUD 29,710 per year (living expenses)
- Additional funds for spouse and children are required.
- Tuition fees for children, if they will study in Australia.

5. Work Rights

- Spouses of students pursuing master’s or doctoral degrees can generally work full time.
- For bachelor’s level, work rights for spouse are usually restricted (up to 48 hours per fortnight).

6. Application Process

- Submit the dependent visa application online (ImmiAccount).
- Provide relevant documents (relationship proof, financial proof, health insurance, etc.).
- Health and character checks for all applicants.

7. Health Insurance

- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is mandatory for all family members.
