What is the stay-back option after studying in France?

After completing your studies in France, international students have attractive stay-back (post-study work) options:

1. Master’s Degree Graduates:
- If you complete a Master’s degree (or higher) from a French institution, you are eligible to apply for a “temporary residence permit” (Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour – APS).
- This permit allows you to stay in France for up to 12 months after graduation (renewable once for a total of 24 months in some cases), to look for jobs or start a business.
- If you secure a job related to your studies with a certain minimum salary, you can then apply for a work permit or change your status to “employee.”

2. Bachelor’s Degree Graduates:
- Bachelor’s graduates do not automatically qualify for the APS. However, if you find a job offer related to your qualification with the required salary, you can apply to switch your status to a work visa.

3. PhD Graduates:
- PhD holders may also apply for the APS and, depending on their research and employment, may be eligible for longer-term residence permits or research visas.

4. Job Search & Work Opportunities:
- During the APS period, you can work part-time (up to 964 hours per year) and search for full-time employment.
- Once you secure a job with a salary at least 1.5 times the minimum wage (SMIC), you can apply for a change of status to a long-term work permit (Carte de séjour salarié).

Summary Table:

| Level of Study | Stay-Back Option | Duration |
|-------------------|--------------------------|------------|
| Master’s/PhD | APS (Post-study permit) | 12 months (renewable once) |
| Bachelor's | No APS; possible work permit if job secured |
| PhD | APS or research visa | Up to 24 months or more depending on circumstances |
