Program Overview

The MSc International Health program focuses on developing students' knowledge and skills to address international development goals and alleviate the burden of diseases affecting marginalized communities. It emphasizes research methods training, providing a solid foundation for those intending to pursue further postgraduate research (PhD) or careers in international health policy, systems, or programs. ​

Curriculum: The curriculum comprises core modules that introduce key issues and challenges within international health policy, systems, and programs. Students engage with current debates around health, poverty, and development, and can tailor their learning through optional modules aligned with their interests. A distinctive feature of the course is the research project, allowing students to gain firsthand experience in health and healthcare systems research, often in an overseas context. 

Research Focus: The program places a strong emphasis on research methods training, essential for those aiming to work in international health policy, systems, or programs, or to undertake PhD-level study. Students develop competencies in identifying and analyzing factors that cause disparities in health status, resources, and access to health information and services, particularly for marginalized and vulnerable groups. ​

Industry Engagement: Students benefit from an international learning environment, collaborating with professionals from various countries and areas of expertise. The program offers opportunities to work with leading experts in international health and to participate in a study visit to Geneva. This visit includes workshops and meetings with health-related UN and international organizations such as the World Health Organization, UNAIDS, and Médecins Sans Frontières, providing valuable industry insights and networking opportunities. 

Global Perspective: Recognizing the global nature of health challenges, the program incorporates a global perspective on health issues, systems, and policies. Students analyze factors that generate disparities in health status and access to health services, particularly for marginalized populations, preparing them to address health inequalities worldwide.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements:

  • Academic Qualifications: International students applying for postgraduate programs at the University of Leeds are generally required to have a minimum academic achievement of 55% or above in their previous studies. This requirement may vary depending on the course and country of origin.
  • English Language Proficiency: Similar to undergraduate programs, international students applying for postgraduate programs must demonstrate their English language proficiency. The required English language test scores are as follows:
    • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 6.5 with no individual component score below 6.0.
    • TOEFL: A minimum overall score of 88, with no individual component score below 19.
    • PTE: A minimum overall score of 64, depending on the course, with no individual component score below 60.
