MSc Civil Engineering

Western Bank-The University of Sheffield

INTAKE: Jan & Sept

Program Overview

The University of Sheffield offers an MSc (Master of Science) program in Civil Engineering, providing students with comprehensive knowledge and skills in various areas of civil engineering.

The MSc in Civil Engineering at the University of Sheffield is a one-year full-time program that aims to equip students with a solid foundation in civil engineering principles and practices. The program covers a wide range of topics, including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, construction management, transportation engineering, and water resources engineering.

The curriculum is designed to provide a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, combining taught modules, laboratory work, and a research project. Students have the opportunity to learn from experienced faculty members and industry experts, gaining valuable insights into real-world civil engineering challenges.

Course Structure:
The MSc in Civil Engineering consists of both core modules and optional modules, allowing students to tailor their studies based on their interests and career goals. The exact modules offered may vary from year to year, but typical modules may include:

Structural Analysis and Design: This module focuses on the analysis and design of various structural systems, including steel, concrete, and timber structures. Students learn about structural behavior, load analysis, and design principles.

Geotechnical Engineering: This module covers topics related to soil mechanics and foundation engineering. Students gain an understanding of soil properties, slope stability, and foundation design for different types of structures.

Construction Management: This module introduces students to project management principles and practices in the context of civil engineering projects. Topics covered may include project planning, cost estimation, risk management, and construction contracts.

Transportation Engineering: This module explores transportation planning and design, including topics such as traffic flow analysis, highway design, and sustainable transportation systems.

Water Resources Engineering: This module focuses on the management and utilization of water resources, including topics like hydrology, hydraulic modeling, flood management, and water supply systems.

In addition to the taught modules, students undertake an individual research project where they apply their knowledge and skills to a specific civil engineering problem or research question. This project allows students to demonstrate their ability to conduct independent research and make practical contributions to the field.
