Program Overview

The LLM in Law and Society (Legal Research) can be undertaken as a standalone master's course or as the initial training component of the four-year (LLM plus PhD) pathway through the ESRC Northern Ireland/North East (NINE) Doctoral Training Centre. The program emphasizes the development of critical analytical skills and a deep understanding of the complex relationship between law and society, preparing students for advanced research opportunities.

Curriculum: The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of legal research methodologies and their application within societal contexts. Students engage with core modules that cover various aspects of law and society, supplemented by optional modules that allow for specialization in areas of individual interest. This flexible structure ensures that students can tailor their studies to align with their research aspirations and career goals.

Research Focus: A significant component of the program is the emphasis on independent research, culminating in a dissertation that allows students to explore specific legal issues within societal frameworks. This focus on research equips students with the methodological tools and theoretical knowledge necessary for conducting high-level legal research, fostering skills that are essential for doctoral studies or research-intensive careers.

Industry Engagement: While the program is academically rigorous, it also acknowledges the importance of practical experience. Students are encouraged to engage with various sectors, including public, voluntary, and private organizations, to apply their research skills in real-world contexts. This engagement enhances their understanding of how legal research impacts policy development and societal change, thereby broadening their professional competencies.

Global Perspective: Newcastle University's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive academic environment ensures that students gain a global perspective on legal issues. The program attracts students from various cultural and academic backgrounds, enriching classroom discussions and broadening the scope of legal research topics. This diversity prepares graduates to address complex legal challenges in an interconnected world, making them valuable contributors to global legal scholarship and practice.
