INTAKE: September

Program Overview

The MPhil in Fine Art at Newcastle University is a research degree that allows students to pursue independent, original research in fine art. The program can be tailored as either practice-led, combining studio practice with textual analysis, or purely theoretical, focusing on art history and criticism. The final submission for a practice-led MPhil includes a combination of studio practice and a written text, while a theoretical MPhil culminates in a thesis of no more than 40,000 words.

Curriculum: The curriculum is research-intensive, with no formal taught modules. Students work closely with a supervisory team to develop their research projects, engaging in regular seminars, workshops, and critiques. The program encourages interdisciplinary approaches, allowing students to explore various mediums and methodologies in their practice or theoretical research.

Research Focus: Students have the flexibility to focus on diverse areas within fine art, including but not limited to painting, sculpture, digital media, drawing, performance, photography, printmaking, and installation. The program emphasizes original contributions to the field, encouraging students to challenge existing paradigms and explore new artistic expressions or theoretical frameworks.

Industry Engagement: While the MPhil is primarily research-focused, Newcastle University maintains strong connections with the contemporary art world. Students have opportunities to engage with practicing artists, curators, and industry professionals through exhibitions, guest lectures, and collaborative projects. These interactions provide valuable insights into the art industry and enhance professional development.

Global Perspective: The program attracts a diverse cohort of students from around the world, fostering a global perspective in artistic practice and research. This multicultural environment enriches the learning experience, promoting cross-cultural dialogues and collaborations that reflect the international nature of contemporary art.
