Program Overview

The MRes Economics program at QMUL emphasizes advanced economic theories, quantitative methods, and econometrics. It serves as a foundational step for those pursuing a PhD, though it can also be undertaken as a standalone degree. The curriculum is structured to provide a robust understanding of economic principles, preparing graduates for various research and professional roles.

Curriculum: In the first year, students engage in core modules covering Microeconomics I and II, Macroeconomics I and II, and Econometrics I and II, each worth 20 credits. The second year offers elective modules such as Advanced Econometrics, Advanced Microeconomics, Advanced Macroeconomics, Foundations in Asset Pricing, Foundations in Corporate Finance, International Economics, Development Economics, Labour & Public Economics, Advanced Finance I, and Advanced Finance II, each worth 15 credits. The program culminates in a dissertation, accounting for 60 credits, allowing students to conduct independent research in their area of interest.

Research Focus: The program's research focus includes macroeconomics, microeconomic theory, game theory, applied microeconomics, econometric theory, time series analysis, theoretical and empirical finance, and financial econometrics. This diverse range enables students to specialize in areas that align with their academic and professional aspirations.

Industry Engagement: Situated near London's financial districts, QMUL offers students opportunities to engage with industry professionals. The SEF collaborates with various governmental and non-governmental agencies, including the UK Treasury, Bank of England, World Bank, Inter-American Development Bank, OECD, and ILO. Postgraduate Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants should have successfully completed a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum overall score of 60% or equivalent.
  • English language proficiency is required, and applicants must provide evidence of their English language skills through an approved language test.
    • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 6.5 with no individual component below 6.0.
    • TOEFL: A minimum overall score of 92, with at least with at least 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking, and 21 in Writing.
    • PTE Academic: A minimum overall score of 71 with 65 in Writing, and 59 in Reading, Listening and Speaking..
  • Some postgraduate programs may have specific subject prerequisites or additional requirements.
