MSc Creative Arts and Mental Health

Charterhouse Square

INTAKE: September

Program Overview

Designed for recent graduates from arts disciplines or mental health-related fields—such as psychology, health sciences, and social sciences—as well as professionals in applied arts practice, mental health, education, and social work, the program delves into the application of creative arts in mental health contexts. Students explore how mental health experiences are portrayed in the arts and popular culture, and how arts practices can challenge and expand both clinical and societal understandings of mental health and the mental health system.

Curriculum: The curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. Core modules include "Performing Mental Health," which examines the portrayal of mental health in performance arts; "Critical Mental Health Sciences," offering a critical perspective on contemporary mental health theory and practice; and "Critical Encounters in Arts and Mental Health," focusing on the intersections between arts-based practices and mental health. Students also have the opportunity to choose elective modules such as "Theatre for Young People: Pedagogy in Practice," "Performance, Activism, Social Justice," and "Text, Self, Performance," allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests. A significant component of the program is the dissertation, a 10,000–15,000-word research project that enables students to investigate a topic of their choice in depth.

Research Focus: The program emphasizes a critical analysis of both scientific and arts-based research methodologies. Students are encouraged to engage in research that interrogates existing mental health practices and explores the potential of arts-based interventions. This includes examining how arts practices can serve as preventive measures, therapeutic interventions, and tools for public engagement in mental health discourse. The interdisciplinary nature of the program fosters a collaborative research environment, drawing on expertise from both the arts and mental health sciences.

Industry Engagement: Situated in London's culturally rich East End, Queen Mary University offers students access to a vibrant arts and mental health community. The program maintains strong connections with local arts organizations and mental health services, providing opportunities for placements and collaborative projects. These partnerships enable students to apply their learning in real-world settings, gaining practical experience and professional networks that are invaluable for future careers in the field.

Global Perspective: The MSc program adopts a global outlook, encouraging students to consider how cultural contexts influence mental health experiences and interventions. Through comparative studies and diverse case analyses, students gain insights into international practices and policies related to arts and mental health. This global perspective equips graduates with the cultural competence to work effectively in varied international settings, addressing mental health challenges through creative and contextually relevant approaches.
