MRes Cardiac and Vascular Medicine

Charterhouse Square

INTAKE: September

Program Overview

The MRes in Cardiac and Vascular Medicine is structured to integrate functional genomics techniques into the exploration of disease mechanisms. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of altered cardiac and vascular functions common in various cardiovascular pathologies. The program emphasizes the development of practical skills combined with analytical reasoning and original thinking, preparing graduates to initiate research in new directions within academia or industry.

Curriculum: The curriculum is divided into a core module and a significant research component. The core module, "Inflammation: Cellular and Vascular Aspects," spans 12 weeks and provides foundational knowledge in inflammation mechanisms related to cardiac and vascular diseases. Following this, students engage in independent research projects lasting 34 weeks, which may involve one, two, or three rotations across different laboratories, all centered around a cohesive research theme suitable for a dissertation. This structure ensures that students acquire both theoretical knowledge and hands-on research experience.

Research Focus: Hosted by the William Harvey Research Institute, the program offers a research-intensive environment where students delve into various aspects of cardiovascular biology. Research areas include hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, diabetic vascular disease, renal failure, and critical care research. A common theme across these topics is the study of endothelial and vessel wall cell biology, as well as cardiac inflammatory mechanisms. The program aims to produce graduates proficient in practical laboratory skills and capable of contributing to the identification of novel therapeutic targets.

Industry Engagement: The MRes program benefits from the involvement of leading professionals from both academia and the pharmaceutical industry. This collaboration provides students with exposure to cutting-edge science and practical insights into the pharmaceutical sector. The teaching faculty comprises members of the William Harvey Research Institute and external experts actively engaged in the course, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education that bridges academic research and industry applications.

Global Perspective: Queen Mary University of London attracts a diverse student body from around the world, fostering a multicultural learning environment. The MRes in Cardiac and Vascular Medicine program emphasizes a global approach to cardiovascular research, encouraging students to consider international perspectives and applications of their work. This global outlook prepares graduates to collaborate effectively across cultural boundaries and contribute to worldwide advancements in cardiovascular medicine.
