MA Architecture & Spatial Practices

Berlin

INTAKE: October

Program Overview

The MA in Architecture & Spatial Practices is a two-year, full-time program that explores architecture as a socially engaged, practice-driven discipline. It emphasizes the role of architects as cultural agents who shape environments through inclusive, sustainable, and context-sensitive approaches. Students are encouraged to critically examine the relationship between spatial design, social dynamics, and global urban issues, preparing them to work across a range of scales from interiors and buildings to urban and territorial systems.

Curriculum: The curriculum is structured around design studios, supported by seminars, theoretical modules, and research-based workshops. Key areas of study include urban design strategies, spatial theory, sustainability, digital fabrication, material experimentation, and participatory design. Through hands-on projects, students engage with real-world scenarios and complex spatial problems. The program culminates in a Master Thesis, where students independently develop and present a comprehensive design-research project that reflects both conceptual depth and professional relevance.

Research Focus: The program fosters a strong culture of applied and critical research, encouraging students to explore architectural questions through both academic inquiry and spatial experimentation. Research themes commonly addressed include urban regeneration, ecological design, migration and spatial justice, digital urbanism, and post-anthropocentric design approaches. Students are supported by experienced faculty and the university’s research network, allowing them to engage with current debates and contribute original perspectives to the field of architecture.

Industry Engagement: Berlin International promotes strong engagement with the architectural profession and creative industries through collaborations with firms, NGOs, cultural institutions, and urban development agencies. Students participate in lectures by practicing architects, collaborative projects, design exhibitions, and site-specific interventions, gaining direct exposure to the complexities of professional practice. Berlin’s active design and architecture scene further provides opportunities for networking, internships, and professional growth.

Global Perspective: The MA in Architecture & Spatial Practices has a clear international orientation, both in content and community. As part of the BAU Global Network, students have access to exchange programs, cross-border academic collaborations, and global learning experiences. The program’s English-language instruction and multicultural classroom environment foster global citizenship, critical dialogue, and diverse design perspectives. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers in international architecture firms, urban research, design consultancies, or academic institutions worldwide.
