MA Interior Architecture/Interior Design

MA Interior Architecture/Interior Design

Berlin

INTAKE: October

Program Overview

The program is structured to build upon existing knowledge, pushing students to expand their professional perspectives. It focuses on advanced design and research skills, preparing graduates to apply their understanding of various interior discourses—including cultural, social, and technological aspects—to professional contexts in Germany and internationally. The program is firmly rooted in Berlin's vibrant design scene, providing a rich backdrop for learning.

Curriculum: The curriculum is practice-driven and student-centered. In the first year, students engage in advanced visualization classes and real-life design charrettes to hone their professional skills. They also have the opportunity to take specialized design and technology electives. The second year continues with further design and research opportunities, alongside electives in theory and communication. The program culminates in the final semester with a master's thesis and a master's design project on a topic of the student's choosing.

Research Focus: BI's research is coordinated through its dedicated Research Institute, which supports faculty and student projects. While the university as a whole is committed to knowledge-based solutions for societal problems, the MA Interior Architecture/Interior Design program encourages students to integrate research into their design process. Students are challenged to develop and apply analytical methods for site-specific spatial and material research, with a particular focus on principles of local and sustainable creative practices. This culminates in the master's thesis, where they conduct independent research on a self-chosen topic.

Industry Engagement: A key component of BI's educational philosophy is its strong connection to the professional world. The MA program provides a practice-oriented learning environment led by an experienced international faculty. The curriculum incorporates real-life design charrettes, giving students hands-on experience and preparing them for industry demands. Additionally, the university's location in Berlin, a major hub for art, design, and innovation, provides students with ample opportunities for networking and career development. Graduates are prepared for a variety of roles in interior architecture, design, and related creative industries.

Global Perspective: Berlin International places a high value on a global perspective. The university is a part of the BAU Global Education Network, which facilitates international collaboration and exchange. All programs are taught in English, attracting a diverse student body from many countries. This multicultural environment, combined with the curriculum's focus on understanding design in different physical and cultural contexts, prepares students for international careers in a globalized world. The university also maintains partnerships with other institutions worldwide, offering students diverse opportunities for study abroad and an internationalized study experience.
