Program Overview

This interdisciplinary program is a collaborative effort between the University of Glasgow's School of Engineering and the Glasgow School of Art. It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of both civil engineering and architectural design, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between the two fields. The curriculum is structured to foster creativity and technical proficiency, enabling graduates to approach complex design challenges with innovative solutions.

Curriculum: The program spans four years, with a curriculum that evolves from foundational engineering concepts to advanced architectural design. In the initial year, students engage with courses covering architecture, civil engineering, mathematics, dynamics, electronics, materials, statics, thermodynamics, and engineering skills. As they progress to the second and third years, the focus shifts to specialized topics in civil and structural engineering, complemented by architecture studies. Practical application is a cornerstone of the program, with laboratory classes, computational modeling, project work, surveying fieldwork, design projects, and site visits. A notable component is the multidisciplinary design project in the third year, where students collaborate with peers from architecture and quantity surveying disciplines to tackle real-world design problems.

Research Focus: The University of Glasgow is renowned for its research excellence, particularly within the School of Engineering. Students in the Civil Engineering with Architecture program have opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research projects that address contemporary challenges in sustainable design, structural innovation, and urban development. Global Perspective: Recognizing the global nature of engineering and architecture, the program offers students opportunities to gain international experience. Students may apply to study abroad in their third year, immersing themselves in different cultural and academic environments. For those pursuing the MEng pathway, the fifth-year project can be undertaken at overseas institutions, further broadening their global outlook and professional network

BEng/MEng Civil Engineering with Architecture program, graduates have excellent career prospects in the construction and architectural industries.

Their role includes working closely with clients to understand their needs, developing design concepts, and overseeing the construction process.

Structural Engineer: Graduates can work as structural engineers, specializing in the analysis and design of building structures. They may be involved in areas such as the design of foundations, beams, columns, and other structural components. Their work ensures the structural integrity and safety of buildings, considering factors such as load-bearing capacity, material strength, and environmental conditions.

Construction Project Manager: Graduates can pursue careers as construction project managers, responsible for overseeing construction projects from inception to completion. They may be involved in areas such as project planning, cost estimation, resource management, and quality control. Their role includes coordinating different teams, managing budgets and timelines, and ensuring that projects are completed efficiently and within specifications.

Urban Planner: Graduates can work as urban planners, focusing on the development and implementation of plans for cities and communities. They may be involved in areas such as land use planning, zoning regulations, transportation systems, or environmental sustainability.
