Program Overview

This degree is designed for practicing musicians interested in understanding the technical and business aspects of commercial music. Students will develop skills in performance, composition, improvisation, arrangement, songwriting, production, music business and management, and studio techniques. Regular public performances are integral to the course, providing students with practical experience and exposure. The program is accredited by the Joint Audio Media Education Support (JAMES), ensuring it meets high industry standards.

Curriculum: The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including popular music performance, composition, improvisation, arrangement, songwriting, production, music business and management, and studio techniques. Students will have regular opportunities to perform in public, at events such as the annual music show, social and formal events, and venues across the city. The course is taught through a combination of lectures, composition tutorials, practical workshops, and group discussions. Assessment methods include coursework, portfolios, assignments, case studies, oral and graphic presentations, collaborative and interdisciplinary teamwork projects, computer testing, and examinations.

Research Focus: The program encourages students to engage with the aesthetic, analytical, sociological, and historical dimensions of music. Students will develop self-learning and team-working skills, both crucial to success in the professional sphere. The course provides a platform for students to explore new ideas and concepts, encouraging them to take risks, experiment with their ideas and processes, and develop their creative voice. ​

This event features guest presentations from industry professionals such as Sound on Sound, Avid, Yamaha, Ableton, and Focusrite.
