Program Overview

This course delves into the transformative power of theatre within non-traditional and marginalized environments. It emphasizes the role of drama in fostering social change and community development. Students engage with various groups, including young people with care experience, individuals in prison settings, schools, older communities, refugees, and people with disabilities. 

Curriculum: Structured in three stages—Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, and MA—the curriculum offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. Modules cover Applied Theatre Context and Work-based Learning, Crafting Your Masters Study, Applied Educational Thinkers and Theorists, Performance and Practice as Research, and an Independent Study (Major Project). Students also have the option to select education modules alongside peers from other MA Education programs, enriching their interdisciplinary understanding. ​

Research Focus: The program encourages students to critically examine how theatre practices can drive educational and social transformation. Emphasizing reflexivity and positionality, it fosters skills in knowledge exchange and evaluating innovations to enhance education policies and practices. ​

Industry Engagement: A cornerstone of the program is its integration with Derby Theatre, a professional producing theatre. This affiliation allows students to collaborate with industry professionals, participate in live projects, and gain hands-on experience in various roles such as performers, directors, and facilitators. The course also boasts partnerships with local artists and companies, including Hubbub, Anansi, 1623, LaPelle’s Factory, and Maison Foo, providing a vibrant network for professional development. 

Global Perspective: The University of Derby maintains international collaborations, including franchise partnerships with institutions like Vakalo College of Art and Design in Greece and Jiangxi University of Technology in China.
