Program Overview

The MA/MDes Design program offers flexibility, allowing students to pursue either a broad MA Design qualification or specialize in one of six MDes pathways: Graphic Design, Illustration, Fashion, Textile Design, Interior and Spatial Design, or Product Design. The curriculum emphasizes the development of a personalized design practice that transcends traditional boundaries, encouraging students to engage with complex societal issues and envision sustainable solutions.

Curriculum: Students engage in integrative studio practice, combining collaborative thinking and production. The program includes optional modules, professional development seminars, and the freedom to develop individual design projects. Facilities available to students encompass Apple Mac suites, the Digital Design Hub, workshops for wood and metal, 3D printing equipment, fashion studios, textile workshops, print studios, and industry-standard software. Regular live design projects and concept panels are integral, ensuring students are continually challenged to articulate and reflect on their learning.

Research Focus: The University of Derby emphasizes innovation and research, aiming to advance knowledge and contribute to a research-informed curriculum. The institution collaborates across six academic themes to develop innovative solutions to real-world problems, preparing learners for the future and aiding regional organizations in innovation and growth. ​

Industry Engagement: A distinctive feature of the program is its strong industry engagement. Graduates have pursued careers as independent designers, joined various creative industries, and established freelance businesses, working with organizations like BBC Creative, The Partners, Superunion, Design for Good, Derby Football Club, and others.

English language proficiency:

  • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 6.0 or 6.5 with no individual component below 6.0.
