INTAKE: September

Program Overview

Students begin by examining sociological approaches to understanding social order and change, delving into topics such as social difference, stratification, and recent shifts in British society. As they progress, learners have the opportunity to explore areas of personal interest, including gender, race, class, inequality, criminal justice, social policy, religion, and crime.

Curriculum: The curriculum is interdisciplinary, incorporating perspectives from criminology, psychology, history, law, and politics. This multifaceted approach allows students to analyze complex societal dynamics from various angles. Modules such as Global Justice, Modern American Culture and Counter-Culture, The Media, Society, and Politics, Gender and Politics, and Green Criminology: Environmental Crime and Climate Justice enable students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world contexts.

Research Focus: The program is underpinned by world-leading research, with 97% of research outputs rated 'world leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF 2021). Faculty members are active researchers whose work informs their teaching. For instance, Professor Vicki Harman investigates the changing nature of family life, social identities, and food consumption in women's prisons, while Dr. Maxime Lepoutre focuses on hate speech and its mitigation.

Industry Engagement: Students can enhance their employability through an integrated professional placement between the second and third years. The university's strong industry connections facilitate placements across various career paths, with recent providers including the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Ministry of Defence, Microsoft, and BMW. This hands-on experience equips students with practical skills and valuable industry insights.

Global Perspective: The program offers opportunities to study abroad in the third year, with partner institutions in countries such as Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, and the USA. This international exposure broadens students' perspectives and enriches their academic experience.
