Program Overview

The MSc by Research in Computer Science program at Swansea University is designed to enable students to conduct independent and original research in their chosen field of computer science.

  1. Research Focus: The program allows students to specialize in a specific area of computer science, such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, software engineering, or human-computer interaction. Students work closely with their supervisors to define their research topic and objectives.

  2. Research Proposal: Students are required to develop a research proposal outlining the aims, objectives, and methodology of their research project. This proposal serves as a roadmap for their research and is assessed for its feasibility and academic merit.

  3. Research Skills Development: The program provides students with advanced research skills, including literature review, research design, data collection and analysis, programming, and experimental evaluation. Students gain expertise in using state-of-the-art tools, techniques, and methodologies in computer science research.

  4. Independent Research Project: The core component of the program is an independent research project, where students conduct original research under the guidance of their supervisors. They are responsible for executing their research plan, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions based on their findings.

  5. Research Seminars and Workshops: Students participate in research seminars and workshops where they present their work, receive feedback from peers and faculty members, and engage in scholarly discussions. These platforms help students refine their research skills and expand their knowledge of the broader computer science research community.

  6. Research Output and Thesis: The culmination of the program is the submission of a research thesis, which showcases the students' research findings, methodologies, and contributions to the field of computer science. The thesis undergoes evaluation by a panel of experts, and successful completion leads to the award of an MSc degree.
