Program Overview

The MSc Occupational Therapy (Pre-Registration) program at the University of Essex is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to become competent occupational therapists.

  1. Pre-Registration Program: The MSc Occupational Therapy program is a pre-registration program, which means it is suitable for individuals who do not hold a previous qualification in occupational therapy. The program is accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT) and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  2. Professional Competence: The program focuses on developing the professional competence of students to practice as occupational therapists. Students learn to assess and understand the needs of individuals with physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges and provide evidence-based interventions to promote their well-being and participation in daily activities.

  3. Core Areas of Study: The program covers a wide range of core areas essential to occupational therapy practice, including anatomy and physiology, human development across the lifespan, occupational therapy theory and models, research methods, and clinical reasoning.

  4. Practice Placements: Students gain hands-on experience through practice placements in various healthcare settings. These placements provide opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life scenarios, work with diverse client populations, and develop essential clinical skills under the supervision of qualified occupational therapists.

  5. Interdisciplinary Approach: The program encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and emphasizes the importance of working within healthcare teams. Students learn to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, and social workers, to provide comprehensive and holistic care to clients.

  6. Research and Evidence-Based Practice: The program promotes the integration of research and evidence-based practice in occupational therapy. Students learn to critically appraise research literature, apply research findings to clinical practice, and contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions.

  7. Professional Development: The program fosters the development of professional skills and attributes required for effective occupational therapy practice. Students learn about professional ethics, cultural competence, communication skills, and the importance of continuous professional development to maintain high standards of practice.
