Program Overview

The MSc Geotechnical Engineering and Management course at the University of Birmingham is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in both geotechnical engineering and management principles. It aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become successful geotechnical engineers, who can apply their expertise to the design and construction of infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, tunnels, and buildings.

The course covers a wide range of topics, including soil mechanics, foundation engineering, slope stability analysis, ground improvement techniques, and geotechnical design. Students also learn about project management, risk assessment, and sustainability in geotechnical engineering.

The course is suitable for students with a background in civil engineering or a related subject, who wish to specialize in geotechnical engineering. It is taught by experts in the field and is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.

The course is offered on a full-time basis over one year or part-time over two years, with modules taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory classes, and site visits. Students are also required to undertake a research project, which provides an opportunity to apply their knowledge to a real-world problem and develop research skills.
