Program Overview

The Honours Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Georgian College offers students a comprehensive education and training to become competent and compassionate registered nurses. This four-year program combines theoretical learning with hands-on clinical experience to prepare students for the diverse challenges of modern healthcare. With a strong emphasis on evidence-based practice, patient-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the program equips students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to provide high-quality nursing care in a variety of settings.  

Curriculum:

  1. Comprehensive Nursing Curriculum: The program curriculum covers a wide range of nursing topics, including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, health assessment, nursing theory, ethics, and professional practice standards. Students learn about the biological, psychological, and social aspects of health and illness, as well as the principles of health promotion, disease prevention, and holistic care.

  2. Clinical Practice Experience: Students gain hands-on clinical experience through supervised clinical placements in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, community health centers, and mental health institutions. Under the guidance of experienced nursing preceptors, students apply theoretical knowledge to real-life nursing situations, develop clinical skills, and provide direct patient care across the lifespan and continuum of care.

  3. Interprofessional Education: The program emphasizes interprofessional education and collaboration, allowing students to work alongside other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, pharmacists, social workers, and allied health professionals. Through interprofessional learning activities and simulations, students learn to communicate effectively, collaborate as part of a healthcare team, and address complex healthcare issues collaboratively.

  4. Evidence-Based Practice: The program emphasizes the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing, teaching students to critically appraise research literature, integrate research findings into clinical practice, and use best available evidence to inform nursing care decisions. Students learn to apply evidence-based guidelines, protocols, and interventions to improve patient outcomes, enhance safety, and promote quality care delivery.

  5. Professional Development and Leadership: The program fosters students' professional development and leadership skills, preparing them for leadership roles within the nursing profession. Students learn about nursing leadership and management principles, advocacy, policy development, and healthcare system navigation. They also have opportunities to engage in extracurricular activities, professional associations, and continuing education to stay abreast of advancements in nursing practice and contribute to the ongoing development of the profession.

  6. Cultural Competence and Diversity: The program emphasizes cultural competence and diversity awareness, teaching students to provide culturally sensitive and inclusive care to individuals, families, and communities from diverse cultural backgrounds. Students learn about cultural humility, cultural safety, and the social determinants of health, allowing them to deliver culturally competent care that respects the values, beliefs, and preferences of diverse populations.

  • Minimum Academic Requirement: International students applying for undergraduate programs at Georgian College must have completed their secondary education or equivalent with a minimum overall average of 65% or higher.
     
  • English Language Proficiency:  
    • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 7, with no band score less than 6.5.
    • TOEFL: A minimum score of 89 on the internet-based test (iBT).
    • PTE Academic: A minimum score of 61.
    • DET Score: A minimum score of 140.

Unfortunately, Georgian College does not provide scholarships to international students. However, there are several external scholarships and bursaries that international students can apply for.

Registered nurses provide direct patient care, assess patient needs, develop care plans, administer medications, coordinate interdisciplinary care, and educate patients and families about health promotion, disease prevention, and self-care management.

  2. Specialty Nursing Roles: Graduates may choose to specialize in specific areas of nursing practice, such as medical-surgical nursing, critical care nursing, emergency nursing, psychiatric-mental health nursing, pediatric nursing, maternal-child health nursing, or gerontological nursing. Specialty nursing roles offer opportunities for advanced practice, specialized knowledge, and professional growth within specific patient populations or clinical settings.

  3. Advanced Practice Nursing: Graduates may pursue advanced practice nursing roles, such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, nurse anesthetists, or nurse midwives, by completing additional education and certification requirements. Advanced practice nurses have expanded scope of practice and autonomy in assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing health conditions, as well as prescribing medications and ordering diagnostic tests.

  4. Nurse Educator/Instructor: Graduates interested in education and teaching can pursue careers as nurse educators or instructors in academic institutions, healthcare organizations, or professional development settings. Nurse educators develop and deliver nursing education programs, courses, and workshops, facilitate clinical rotations, mentor students, and contribute to curriculum development and evaluation. Nurse educators play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of nurses and advancing nursing education and scholarship.

  5. Nurse Researcher: Graduates with an interest in nursing research can pursue careers as nurse researchers or research coordinators in academic institutions, healthcare organizations, research institutes, or government agencies. Nurse researchers conduct scientific research studies, analyze data, publish findings, and contribute to evidence-based practice and policy development in nursing and healthcare. Nurse researchers may specialize in areas such as clinical research, health services research, or translational research.

  6. Nursing Leadership and Management: Graduates may pursue leadership and management roles within healthcare organizations, such as nurse managers, nurse supervisors, or nursing directors. Nursing leaders and managers oversee nursing departments, coordinate patient care services, manage budgets and resources, develop policies and procedures, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards and quality benchmarks. Nursing leaders play a vital role in promoting patient safety, quality improvement, and staff development within healthcare settings.

  7. Public Health Nursing: Graduates interested in population health and community-based nursing can pursue careers in public health agencies, government departments, or non-profit organizations. Public health nurses assess community health needs, plan and implement health promotion and disease prevention programs, conduct health screenings and immunizations, and advocate for policies and interventions that promote health equity and social justice.
