Program Overview

The Honours Bachelor of Interior Design program at Georgian College offers students a comprehensive education in the field of interior design, preparing them for successful careers as professional interior designers. This four-year program combines creative design coursework with technical training and practical experience to develop students' skills in spatial planning, design principles, materials selection, building codes, and project management. Through studio-based learning, industry partnerships, and experiential projects, students gain hands-on experience in designing residential, commercial, institutional, and hospitality spaces while also developing a strong foundation in design theory and history.

Curriculum:

  1. Comprehensive Design Curriculum: The program curriculum covers a wide range of design-related courses, including design theory, interior architecture, environmental psychology, sustainable design, and computer-aided design (CAD). Students learn to conceptualize, develop, and communicate design ideas effectively through sketches, drawings, models, and digital presentations.

  2. Studio-Based Learning: Studio courses form the core of the program, providing students with hands-on experience in designing interior spaces. In studio classes, students work on design projects individually and in teams, exploring various design concepts, solving spatial challenges, and developing creative solutions for real-world design problems. Studio courses allow students to refine their design skills, receive feedback from instructors and peers, and build a professional design portfolio.

  3. Technical Training and Building Codes: In addition to design coursework, students receive technical training in areas such as construction methods, building materials, building codes, and regulations. They learn to integrate technical considerations into their design solutions, ensuring that designs meet safety, accessibility, and sustainability standards. Students gain knowledge of relevant codes and regulations governing interior spaces, preparing them to navigate the regulatory landscape in their professional practice.

  4. Industry Partnerships and Professional Development: The program maintains strong partnerships with industry stakeholders, including design firms, architectural practices, manufacturers, and professional associations. Through industry partnerships, students have access to guest lectures, site visits, design competitions, and networking events, providing valuable insights into industry trends, practices, and career opportunities. Students also have the opportunity to participate in professional development workshops, portfolio reviews, and internship placements to prepare for their transition into the workforce.

  5. Experiential Projects and Real-World Clients: Throughout the program, students engage in experiential learning projects that allow them to work with real-world clients and stakeholders. From residential renovations to commercial design projects, students gain practical experience in managing client relationships, conducting design consultations, and presenting design proposals. Experiential projects challenge students to apply their design skills in diverse contexts, develop project management skills, and demonstrate their ability to deliver innovative and client-centered design solutions.

  6. Design Theory and History: In addition to practical design skills, students study design theory and history to understand the broader context of interior design practice. They explore the historical development of design movements, analyze influential designers and their works, and critically examine design theories and philosophies. By studying design theory and history, students develop a deeper understanding of the social, cultural, and environmental factors that shape design decisions and trends.
