Program Overview

Sheridan College's Honours Bachelor of Craft and Design (Textiles) program offers students a rigorous and immersive education in textile arts and design. Over four years, students explore a wide range of techniques, materials, and processes, gaining hands-on experience in weaving, knitting, dyeing, printing, and surface embellishment. The program emphasizes both traditional craftsmanship and innovative approaches to textile design, preparing students to create original and conceptually rich textile artworks, fabrics, and products. Through studio-based courses, collaborative projects, and industry placements, students develop a strong foundation in design theory, material exploration, and professional practice, culminating in a final-year thesis project that showcases their unique creative vision and technical skills.

Curriculum:

  1. Technical Skill Development: Students in the program acquire proficiency in a variety of textile techniques, including hand weaving, machine knitting, surface design, and textile manipulation. Through hands-on studio practice and experimentation, they learn how to work with different fibers, yarns, and fabrics, mastering the technical skills necessary to bring their design concepts to life.

  2. Exploration of Materiality and Process: The program encourages students to explore the expressive potential of materials and processes in textile design. They experiment with traditional and unconventional materials, such as natural fibers, synthetic yarns, and experimental textiles, pushing the boundaries of traditional textile practices and discovering new possibilities for artistic expression.

  3. Conceptual Development and Design Thinking: Students develop their ability to conceptualize and develop textile designs that are conceptually rich, visually compelling, and technically proficient. They learn how to research, ideate, and iterate on design concepts, drawing inspiration from diverse sources such as art, culture, history, and contemporary trends. Through critical analysis and reflection, they refine their design ideas and develop a coherent design language that reflects their personal aesthetic and conceptual interests.

  4. Industry-Relevant Skills and Professional Practice: The program equips students with the practical skills and professional knowledge needed to succeed in the textile and fashion industries. They learn about design principles, color theory, textile construction techniques, and textile technology, as well as relevant topics such as sustainability, ethical production, and market trends. Additionally, students gain experience working on collaborative projects with industry partners and participating in internships and co-op placements, allowing them to build connections and gain real-world experience in the field.

  5. Thesis Project and Portfolio Development: In their final year, students undertake a thesis project that serves as a culmination of their studies. This self-directed project allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, demonstrating their creative vision, technical skills, and critical thinking abilities. Through the thesis project, students develop a professional portfolio of work that showcases their strengths as textile designers and prepares them for entry into the workforce or further study at the graduate level.
