Program Overview

The University offers both MSc by Research (MScR) and PhD programs in Korean Studies, designed for students aiming to engage critically with contemporary issues related to the two Koreas and East Asian relations. The MScR program is ideal for those with a clear research focus, combining research assignments with a 15,000-word dissertation under expert supervision. The PhD program provides an opportunity to undertake specialized research, contributing original insights to the field. Both programs benefit from the university's strong emphasis on interdisciplinary study and its unique combination of expertise in Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and East Asian Relations. ​

Curriculum: The curriculum is structured to provide a deep understanding of modern Korean history, society, culture, political economy, urban studies, security, public policy, political science, and international relations. Students engage with a range of research methods and are encouraged to undertake independent projects that align with their academic and professional goals. The program's flexibility allows for a tailored educational experience, supported by a community of scholars and access to extensive resources.

Research Focus: Edinburgh's Korean Studies program is distinguished by its interdisciplinary research approach, addressing the Korean peninsula's central role in 21st-century geopolitical developments. Faculty expertise spans various areas, including modern Korean history, political economy, urban studies, security, public policy, political science, and international relations. Industry Engagement: While the program is primarily research-focused, students are encouraged to engage with industry through internships and collaborations. Potential partners include institutions like the East Asia Institute, Asan Institute for Policy Studies, Seoul National University Asia Centre, and the Yun Posun Democracy Institute in South Korea. These opportunities provide practical experience and insights into Korea's political, economic, and social landscape, enriching academic learning with real-world applications. ​

Postgraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective postgraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are typically required to have achieved a minimum academic qualification of approximately 60%, based on their previous academic achievements and qualifications.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 70, with at least 59 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

Work experience: Some postgraduate courses may require relevant work experience in the field.

Additionally, some courses may have higher entry requirements or additional selection criteria, such as interviews or portfolio submissions.
