INTAKE: September

Program Overview

The GEPS MSc provides a social science-based, practice-oriented exploration of global environmental challenges and solutions. It offers flexibility, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests by engaging with various methodological, disciplinary, and integrative approaches. The core coursework combines environmental politics, environmental sociology, and normative philosophy, fostering a multifaceted understanding of environmental issues.

Curriculum: The program requires the completion of six courses over two semesters, including the core course 'Global Environment: Key Issues' in Semester 1. Students choose additional courses from a diverse selection, enabling them to specialize according to their interests. Teaching methods encompass seminars, group work, lectures, presentations, and guided independent study, with assessments conducted through coursework, seminar participation, and presentations. In the third semester, students undertake a dissertation, which can be a standard research project or a placement-based dissertation involving research with a host organization such as NGOs, charities, social enterprises, think-tanks, or government bodies.

Research Focus: The GEPS program emphasizes critical engagement with contemporary environmental debates and theoretical perspectives. Students develop the knowledge and analytical tools to address questions such as the feasibility of meaningful environmental agreements in a system of sovereign states, the intrinsic value of the environment beyond economic exploitation, the drivers and effects of environmental activism, and the nature and attainability of environmental justice.

Industry Engagement: The program offers a placement-based dissertation option, providing students with the opportunity to work within a professional setting for eight weeks, conducting research with organizations in the UK or overseas. This experience allows students to apply their academic knowledge to real-world environmental challenges, enhancing their practical skills and professional networks. Placements are competitive and subject to approval, ensuring a rigorous and valuable experience.

Global Perspective: Addressing environmental issues requires a global outlook, and the GEPS program prepares students to analyze and engage with environmental challenges on an international scale. The curriculum explores the complexities of achieving environmental agreements among sovereign states, the global nature of environmental justice, and the diverse cultural and political contexts influencing environmental action. Students can also participate in the University's climate and sustainability initiatives, further broadening their global engagement.
