Program Overview

This LLM program focuses on the development and application of international, European, and national laws for environmental protection. Students will critically evaluate how these different levels of law-making interact and influence environmental governance. The curriculum also explores the role of various actors, including international institutions, national governments, NGOs, and the private sector, in environmental protection and natural resource management.

Curriculum: The program requires the completion of 180 credits, comprising 120 credits from taught courses and a 60-credit dissertation. Compulsory courses include "International Environmental Law" and "International Climate Change Law," providing foundational knowledge in these critical areas. Students can also choose from a range of optional courses, such as "Climate Change Litigation: Practice and Theory," "International Ocean Governance and the Protection of the Marine Environment," and "Transnational Waste Law and Circular Economy," allowing for specialization according to individual interests. Additionally, there may be opportunities to take environment-related courses from other schools within the university, such as the School of Social and Political Science and the School of GeoSciences. ​

Research Focus: The LLM program emphasizes independent research, culminating in a 10,000-word dissertation on a chosen topic within environmental and climate change law. This component enables students to demonstrate a comprehensive grasp of relevant literature and engage critically with various sources, fostering originality and independent thinking. The faculty comprises experts actively involved in cutting-edge research in international, environmental, and climate change law, providing a robust support system for student research endeavors. 

Industry Engagement: Students benefit from exposure to a community of researchers, international scholars, and practitioners actively working in environmental law and policy. The program's interdisciplinary approach, with teaching contributions from various university departments, offers diverse perspectives and insights. Postgraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective postgraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are typically required to have achieved a minimum academic qualification of approximately 60%, based on their previous academic achievements and qualifications.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 70, with at least 59 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

Work experience: Some postgraduate courses may require relevant work experience in the field.
