Program Overview

The MSc GeoEnergy is a one-year, full-time program (with the option to study part-time) that provides a comprehensive understanding of the scientific, technological, and economic aspects of geoenergy. This multidisciplinary program is designed for students with a background in geosciences, engineering, or a related field, and it prepares graduates for careers in the growing field of geoenergy. The program includes both theoretical and practical learning experiences, focusing on developing skills to analyze and evaluate geoenergy systems and their environmental impact.

Curriculum: The curriculum covers a range of essential topics in geoenergy, including geophysical methods for energy exploration, geological reservoirs, geothermal energy, carbon capture and storage (CCS), and energy policy. Core modules explore energy resource management, environmental sustainability, and the scientific principles behind various geoenergy technologies. Students can also choose optional modules in specific areas of interest, such as advanced reservoir engineering, environmental monitoring, or the economics of energy systems. The program culminates in a dissertation, where students conduct independent research on a topic related to geoenergy.

Postgraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective postgraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are typically required to have achieved a minimum academic qualification of approximately 60%, based on their previous academic achievements and qualifications.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 70, with at least 59 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

Work experience: Some postgraduate courses may require relevant work experience in the field.
