Program Overview

The MTh and MSc in World Christianity programs offer students the opportunity to study Christianity in a broad global context. Students will explore Christianity’s expansion and transformation, particularly in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The curriculum combines historical, theological, and sociocultural approaches to understanding Christianity’s role in shaping the modern world. Graduates are prepared for careers in theology, academia, interfaith dialogue, or international development.

Curriculum: The curriculum offers a wide range of topics, from the history of Christianity and global missionary movements to contemporary issues faced by Christians in diverse regions. Core modules include the history of Christianity in different regions, Christian thought in a global context, and the role of the church in the modern world. Optional modules allow students to specialize in areas such as theology and religion, philosophy, and the intersection of Christianity with politics and social issues. The program culminates in a dissertation, allowing students to conduct original research on a topic of their choice within the field of World Christianity.

Research Focus: The research focus of the MTh and MSc in World Christianity is to investigate the global history, development, and contemporary issues surrounding Christianity. It includes examining the migration of Christian ideas and practices, the evolution of global Christian communities, and the impact of Christianity on different cultures and societies. Students are encouraged to engage with key questions such as the interaction between Christianity and other world religions, as well as the church's response to globalization and social justice. The University of Edinburgh’s Divinity School is recognized for its strong research output, particularly in the areas of global Christianity, religious pluralism, and the theological challenges posed by a diverse world.

Postgraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective postgraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are typically required to have achieved a minimum academic qualification of approximately 60%, based on their previous academic achievements and qualifications.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 70, with at least 59 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

Work experience: Some postgraduate courses may require relevant work experience in the field.

It is important to note that meeting the minimum entry requirements does not guarantee admission, as the university considers factors such as availability of places and competition for the program. Additionally, some courses may have higher entry requirements or additional selection criteria, such as interviews or portfolio submissions.

These scholarships provide full or partial funding for tuition fees and living expenses during the research program.

They can write for religious publications, produce documentaries, or work as editors or producers in media organizations, sharing stories and perspectives on global Christian communities and their contributions to society.
