Program Overview

The MSc in Advanced Power Engineering focuses on the latest developments in power engineering technologies. Students will explore a range of topics, including the integration of wind energy, offshore renewables, energy storage, and photovoltaics. The program aims to provide a deep understanding of both conventional and emerging power systems, fostering the ability to develop innovative solutions in the energy sector. 

Curriculum: In the first year, students undertake taught courses that cover advanced fundamentals, research tools, and techniques in power engineering. These courses provide in-depth knowledge of emerging technologies and advanced numerical methods. The second year is dedicated to a year-long research project, allowing students to focus on a chosen topic within Energy Systems. This project can be conducted within one of the university's research groups or in collaboration with industry partners, culminating in the publication of two journal papers in the Edinburgh Power Engineering Research Archive.

Research Focus: The program emphasizes research-led teaching, encouraging students to engage with current industry trends and challenges. The year-long research project in the second year provides an opportunity to contribute to practical solutions within the field of power engineering. ​

Postgraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective postgraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are typically required to have achieved a minimum academic qualification of approximately 60%, based on their previous academic achievements and qualifications.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 70, with at least 59 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:
