Program Overview

The MSc Advanced Nursing program focuses on developing a critical understanding of contemporary healthcare issues. It integrates current theory, practice, research, and innovation in nursing, health, and social care. Students have the option to choose a specific pathway—leadership, clinical research, or education—or follow a flexible, generic program by selecting relevant courses from across the School of Health in Social Science and the wider university. ​

Curriculum: All students complete a dissertation and an individual literature review or research proposal. Working individually with a supervisor, students develop a critical literature review and research proposal on a topic of their choice. The program offers both full-time (1 year) and part-time (2-6 years) study modes, accommodating diverse professional and personal commitments. ​

Research Focus: Nursing, health, and social care research underpin the entire program. Students engage with current research activities, enhancing their research skills and expanding their knowledge base. The program encourages the development of critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for conducting independent research in nursing. ​

Industry Engagement: The program draws on current theory, practice, research, and innovation in nursing, health, and social care practice to develop a critical understanding of contemporary healthcare. This approach ensures that graduates are well-prepared to contribute effectively to the nursing profession and healthcare delivery. ​

Postgraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective postgraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are typically required to have achieved a minimum academic qualification of approximately 60%, based on their previous academic achievements and qualifications.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 100 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 70, with at least 59 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

Work experience: Some postgraduate courses may require relevant work experience in the field.
