Graduates of the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering program at the University of South Wales are well-equipped to pursue a variety of career paths in the civil engineering industry.

Civil Engineer: Civil engineers are responsible for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads, buildings, and water supply systems. They work on projects from concept to completion, ensuring that structures are safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. Civil engineers may specialize in areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, or hydraulic engineering.

Structural Engineer: Structural engineers design and analyze the structural systems of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure projects to ensure they can withstand various loads and environmental conditions. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed structural drawings and models, conduct structural analysis and simulations, and collaborate with architects, contractors, and other stakeholders to deliver safe and cost-effective structural solutions.

Geotechnical Engineer: Geotechnical engineers study the behavior of soil and rock materials to assess their suitability for construction projects and mitigate risks such as landslides, foundation settlement, and soil erosion. They conduct site investigations, soil testing, and geological surveys to provide recommendations for foundation design, earthworks, slope stabilization, and groundwater management.

Transportation Engineer: Transportation engineers design and manage transportation systems such as roads, highways, railways, airports, and public transit networks. They analyze traffic flow patterns, assess infrastructure needs, and develop plans for transportation projects that improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility. Transportation engineers may also specialize in areas such as traffic engineering, pavement design, or urban transportation planning.

Water Resources Engineer: Water resources engineers focus on the planning, design, and management of water-related infrastructure and systems, including water supply networks, wastewater treatment plants, flood control measures, and hydraulic structures. They work to ensure the efficient use and conservation of water resources, address water quality and pollution issues, and develop sustainable solutions for water management and environmental protection.

Environmental Engineer: Environmental engineers work at the intersection of civil engineering and environmental science to address environmental challenges such as air and water pollution, waste management, and environmental sustainability. They design and implement solutions to protect natural resources, reduce environmental impacts, and comply with regulatory requirements related to environmental protection and conservation.

Construction Manager: Construction managers oversee construction projects from planning through completion, ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. They coordinate construction activities, manage project schedules and budgets, procure materials and equipment, and supervise construction crews and subcontractors. Construction managers may work for construction firms, engineering companies, or government agencies.

Project Engineer: Project engineers play a key role in the execution of engineering projects, providing technical expertise, project management support, and coordination of project activities. They work closely with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects meet technical specifications, regulatory requirements, and client expectations. Project engineers may be involved in a wide range of projects, from infrastructure development to building construction and renovation projects.
