INTAKE: September

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Microbiology (Sandwich) program at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) offers students a comprehensive education in microbiology with the added benefit of a year-long industrial placement. This four-year program equips students with essential theoretical knowledge and practical laboratory skills required for a successful career in microbiology across various sectors, including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, environmental science, and research. The BSc (Hons) Microbiology (Sandwich) program at UCLan provides a rigorous and interdisciplinary curriculum that covers fundamental principles of microbiology along with specialized topics and practical training.

  1. Core Microbiology Knowledge: Students gain a solid foundation in microbiology, studying microbial structure, physiology, genetics, and diversity. They learn about the role of microorganisms in health, disease, biotechnology, and the environment.

  2. Laboratory Skills: The program emphasizes hands-on training in microbiological techniques and laboratory practices. Students develop proficiency in culturing and identifying microorganisms, performing biochemical assays, and using advanced analytical instruments.

  3. Industrial Placement Year: One of the key features of this program is the opportunity for students to undertake a year-long industrial placement between their second and final year of study. This placement allows students to apply their knowledge and skills in a professional setting, gaining valuable work experience and industry insights.

  4. Specialized Modules: Students can tailor their studies by choosing from a range of specialized modules that reflect current trends and developments in microbiology. Topics may include medical microbiology, microbial biotechnology, environmental microbiology, and microbial ecology.

  5. Research Project: In their final year, students undertake an independent research project under the guidance of faculty members. This project enables students to demonstrate their research skills, scientific creativity, and ability to critically analyze and interpret data.
