Program Overview

The BA Animation program at The University of Edinburgh provides students with a solid foundation in animation theory and practice. Students explore various animation techniques, including character animation, stop-motion, compositing, and motion graphics. 1. Animation Techniques: Students learn a wide range of animation techniques, including traditional hand-drawn animation, computer-generated imagery (CGI), stop-motion animation, and motion graphics. They gain proficiency in software such as Adobe Animate, Autodesk Maya, and After Effects.

2. Character Design and Development: The program emphasizes character design and development, teaching students how to create compelling and expressive characters that resonate with audiences. Students explore principles of character animation, personality traits, and visual storytelling.

3. Storytelling and Narrative: Students study the art of storytelling in animation, learning how to develop engaging narratives, plot structures, and storyboards. They explore techniques for conveying emotions and messages through visual storytelling.

4. Visual Effects and Motion Graphics: The program covers visual effects (VFX) and motion graphics, teaching students how to integrate animation with live-action footage, create special effects, and design dynamic title sequences.

5. Industry Engagement and Professional Development: Students engage with industry professionals through guest lectures, workshops, and industry placements. They learn about industry standards, trends, and workflows, preparing them for internships and entry-level positions in animation studios, production companies, advertising agencies, and game studios.

Undergraduate entry requirements:

  1. Academic Qualifications: Prospective undergraduate applicants to the University of Edinburgh are expected to demonstrate strong academic performance in their secondary education or equivalent qualifications. The typical academic requirement for entry is approximately 80%, calculated based on the applicant's secondary school grades or examination results.  

  2. English Language Proficiency:  

    • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Minimum overall score of 6.5, with no individual band score less than 6.0.

    • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum score of 92 on the internet-based test (iBT), with at least 20 in each component (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing).

    • PTE (Pearson Test of English): Minimum overall score of 62, with no less than 54 in each component (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing).

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.
