INTAKE: September

Program Overview

The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences (Health Exercise & Nutrition) program at Cardiff Metropolitan University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the scientific principles underpinning human health, exercise physiology, and nutrition. This interdisciplinary program combines elements of biomedical science, sports science, and nutrition to explore the complex interactions between physical activity, diet, and overall wellbeing. Students gain practical laboratory skills, research expertise, and theoretical knowledge to analyze and evaluate the impact of exercise and nutrition on human health. Through a blend of lectures, seminars, laboratory sessions, and practical exercises, students develop a strong foundation in biomedical sciences while focusing on specialized areas such as exercise physiology, metabolism, and nutritional biochemistry. The program also emphasizes the application of scientific evidence to promote health, prevent disease, and optimize performance in various populations, from athletes to individuals with chronic health conditions.

  1. Foundations of Biomedical Sciences: Students delve into core biomedical disciplines, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, to understand the structure and function of the human body at the cellular and molecular levels.

  2. Exercise Physiology and Health: This module explores the physiological responses and adaptations to exercise, examining how physical activity influences cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, and metabolic systems. Students learn to assess fitness levels, design exercise programs, and apply principles of exercise prescription for health promotion and disease prevention.

  3. Nutrition and Metabolism: Students study the role of nutrition in supporting optimal health and performance, investigating macronutrients, micronutrients, energy metabolism, and dietary requirements across the lifespan. They explore the impact of diet on metabolic health, weight management, and chronic disease risk, and learn to develop evidence-based nutrition strategies for individuals and populations.

  4. Research Methods in Biomedical Sciences: This module equips students with essential research skills and techniques, including experimental design, data analysis, literature review, and scientific communication. Students conduct independent research projects, gaining practical experience in laboratory-based investigations or field studies related to health, exercise, and nutrition.

  5. Applied Exercise Science: Building on foundational knowledge, students examine advanced topics in exercise science, such as sports performance, training principles, exercise testing, and rehabilitation strategies. They learn to assess physical fitness, analyze movement patterns, and design exercise interventions tailored to specific goals and populations, from athletes to clinical populations.
