Program Overview

The BEng Chemical Engineering program at Aston University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of chemical engineering. Students will learn how to apply the principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and engineering to design, develop, and optimize processes for the production of chemicals, materials, energy, and pharmaceuticals. The program emphasizes hands-on learning experiences, practical laboratory work, and industry-relevant projects to ensure that students develop the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in the field of chemical engineering. Through a combination of theoretical coursework, laboratory experiments, and industrial placements, students will gain valuable insights into real-world engineering challenges and develop the problem-solving skills required to address them effectively.

1. Core Engineering Principles: The program covers core engineering principles such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer, reaction engineering, and process control. Students will learn how to apply these principles to analyze and design chemical processes and equipment.

2. Chemical Process Design: Students will gain practical experience in chemical process design, including process simulation, optimization, and safety analysis. They will learn how to design and optimize chemical processes to meet production targets, minimize costs, and ensure environmental sustainability.

3. Laboratory Skills: The program includes extensive laboratory work where students gain hands-on experience in chemical analysis, experimentation, and process simulation using industry-standard software tools. They will learn how to conduct experiments, analyze data, and troubleshoot process problems.

4. Industry Placements: Students have the opportunity to undertake industrial placements with leading chemical engineering companies, where they can apply their knowledge in real-world settings and gain valuable industry experience. These placements provide students with insights into the day-to-day operations of chemical engineering companies and help them develop professional networks.

5. Professional Skills Development: In addition to technical skills, the program focuses on developing students' professional skills, including communication, teamwork, project management, and leadership. Students will learn how to effectively communicate their ideas, work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams, and manage engineering projects from conception to completion.
