Program Overview

The MRes Finance program at the University of Essex provides students with advanced knowledge and research skills in the field of finance. It is designed to equip students with a solid foundation in finance theory, quantitative methods, and research techniques, preparing them for a career in academia or research-intensive roles in the finance industry.

  1. Core Finance Concepts: Students gain a deep understanding of core finance concepts, including investment analysis, portfolio management, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, and risk management. They develop a solid theoretical foundation to analyze and interpret financial data.

  2. Quantitative Methods: The program emphasizes the use of quantitative methods in finance research and decision-making. Students learn statistical techniques, econometric modeling, financial forecasting, and data analysis methods to analyze complex financial data and derive meaningful insights.

They develop critical thinking and analytical skills to conduct independent research in finance.

Topics may include behavioral finance, financial derivatives, corporate governance, international finance, or sustainable finance.

  5. Research Project: The MRes Finance program culminates in a substantial research project, where students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and research skills to investigate a specific finance-related topic of their choice. Under the guidance of faculty members, students conduct independent research and produce a high-quality research report.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements:

  • Applicants should have successfully completed a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum overall score of  50 to 55% or equivalent.
  • English language proficiency is required, and applicants must provide evidence of their English language skills through an approved language test.
    • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 6.5 with no individual component below 6.0.
    • TOEFL: A minimum overall score of 90.
    • PTE Academic: A minimum overall score of 62 with no individual score below 51.
  • Some postgraduate programs may have specific subject prerequisites or additional requirements.

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

Work experience: Some postgraduate courses may require relevant work experience in the field.
