Program Overview

The BA World Performance program at the University of Essex offers students a unique and interdisciplinary approach to the study of performance traditions from around the world. 1. Students explore performance as a multifaceted phenomenon that encompasses a wide range of artistic practices, expressive forms, and cultural meanings.

2. Global Perspective: Students study performance traditions from around the world, including but not limited to theater, dance, music, puppetry, storytelling, and ritual performance. They examine how performance is shaped by cultural, social, political, and historical contexts, and how it reflects and shapes identities, beliefs, and values in diverse communities.

3. Practical Skills: The program provides students with practical training in performance techniques, including acting, movement, voice, and musical performance. Students engage in workshops, rehearsals, and performance projects that allow them to develop their skills as performers and creators while also gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural and aesthetic dimensions of performance.

4. Critical Inquiry: Students learn how to critically analyze and interpret performance texts, practices, and events. They explore theoretical frameworks and methodologies for understanding performance as a form of cultural expression, social communication, and embodied knowledge, engaging with key concepts such as representation, performativity, and cultural hybridity.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements

Academic Qualifications: Applicants should have successfully completed their secondary education with a minimum overall score of 70 to 75% or equivalent in their respective country's grading system.

English language proficiency:

  • IELTS: A minimum overall score of 6.0 with no individual component below 5.5.
  • TOEFL: A minimum overall score of 75.
  • PTE Academic: A minimum overall score of 51.

Students must provide:

  • academic marksheets & transcripts
  • letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement - SOP
  • passport
  • other supporting documents as required by the university.

3. Producer or Arts Administrator: Graduates may work as producers or arts administrators, overseeing the planning, production, and promotion of cultural events and performances. They may work in theaters, festivals, arts organizations, or cultural institutions, coordinating logistics, managing budgets, and liaising with artists, venues, and stakeholders to ensure the success of cultural initiatives.

Educator or Community Arts Practitioner: Some graduates may pursue careers in education or community arts, sharing their knowledge and passion for performance with diverse audiences and communities. 5.
