Program Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Construction Management at Conestoga College focuses on providing students with a strong foundation in construction project management principles, techniques, and best practices. The program covers a wide range of topics, including project planning, scheduling, cost estimation, contract management, quality control, and risk assessment. The optional co-op component allows students to gain practical experience in real-world construction projects, further enhancing their skills and employability.

Construction Project Management Principles: Students learn about the fundamental principles of construction project management, including project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closure. They study various project management methodologies, such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), and learn how to apply these methodologies to successfully deliver construction projects on time, within budget, and according to specifications.

Construction Estimating and Cost Control: The program covers techniques for construction cost estimation and control. Students learn how to prepare accurate cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and other project expenses. They also learn about cost control methods to ensure that projects stay within budget.

Construction Scheduling: Students gain proficiency in developing construction project schedules using industry-standard software such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project. They learn how to create project timelines, assign resources, and manage critical path activities to ensure timely project completion.

Contract Management: The program explores contract management principles in construction projects. Students learn about the different types of construction contracts, contract negotiation, and administration. They also study contract documentation, including requests for proposals (RFPs), requests for quotes (RFQs), and contracts terms and conditions.

Quality Control and Risk Management: Students learn about quality control processes and techniques in construction projects. They study quality assurance, quality control plans, and quality management systems to ensure that projects meet industry standards and client expectations. Additionally, they explore risk assessment and mitigation strategies to identify and manage potential risks throughout the project lifecycle.

Optional Co-op: The optional co-op component provides students with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in real-world construction environments. Through co-op placements, students gain hands-on experience, work alongside industry professionals, and develop valuable industry connections. Co-op positions may include roles such as construction project coordinator, site supervisor, estimator, or contract administrator.

  1. Postgraduate Diploma Programs:

    • Academic Requirement: Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from a recognized institution with a minimum of 55% overall average.
    • English Language Proficiency: International students must demonstrate proficiency in English by meeting the minimum requirements in one of the following tests:
      • IELTS: A minimum overall band score of 6.5, with no individual band score below 6.0.
      • TOEFL: A minimum overall score of 88 on the Internet-based test (iBT), with a minimum score of 21 in each section.
      • PTE: A minimum overall score of 58, with no communicative skills score below 50.
