MSc Satellite Communications Engineering

Guilford - UK

INTAKE: September

Program Overview

The MSc Satellite Communications Engineering program at the University of Surrey is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and practical skills in satellite communications systems and technologies. The program covers a wide range of topics, including satellite systems design, link budget analysis, signal processing, and network protocols.

  1. Satellite Systems Design: The program focuses on the design and analysis of satellite communication systems. Students learn about the different types of satellites, their orbits, and the parameters involved in satellite link design. They gain insights into system-level considerations, such as coverage, capacity, and quality of service.

  2. Link Budget Analysis: Students learn how to perform link budget analysis, which involves estimating the signal power levels and noise levels in a satellite communication link. They understand the factors affecting link performance, such as transmit power, antenna gain, path loss, atmospheric attenuation, and noise figure.

  3. Satellite Signal Processing: The program delves into the techniques and algorithms used in satellite signal processing. Students learn about modulation schemes, error control coding, digital modulation techniques, and demodulation techniques. They gain hands-on experience in simulating and analyzing the performance of satellite communication systems.

  4. Satellite Network Protocols: The program covers the protocols and standards used in satellite communication networks. Students learn about the Internet Protocol (IP) over satellite, satellite access protocols, routing protocols, and Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms. They understand the challenges and solutions for efficient data transmission over satellite links.

  5. Industry-Relevant Projects and Facilities: The University of Surrey emphasizes practical learning and industry engagement in the MSc Satellite Communications Engineering program. Students have the opportunity to work on real-world projects, collaborating with industry partners. They also have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and simulation tools for satellite communications research and development.
