Updated UK Student Visa Requirements 2026 – Living Costs, Fees & eVisa Details

Studying in the UK continues to be a dream destination for international students, thanks to its world-class universities and globally recognised degrees. However, before you apply, it’s essential to understand the latest UK student visa requirements for 2026, including the updated living cost proof, visa fees, and the new eVisa system being introduced for overseas students.

UK Student Visa Overview

The UK Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) allows international students to study full-time at a recognised institution. You can apply for this visa if:

  • You have an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor.

  • You can demonstrate English language proficiency (usually through IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL).

  • You have enough funds to cover your tuition fees and living costs.

Updated UKVI Living Cost Requirements (2026)

For 2026 applications, the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has revised the financial requirements for international students: Effective 11 November 2025

Study Location               Monthly Living Cost Requirement             Minimum Duration to Hold Funds
In London £1,529 per month Funds must be held for at least 28 days
Outside London £1,171 per month Funds must be held for at least 28 days

Students are required to show funds for up to 9 months, depending on their course duration and study location. These funds must be in the applicant’s or parent’s bank account for a continuous 28-day period before the visa application date.

UK Student Visa Fees (2026)

As of 2026, the UK Student Visa application fee is £524, payable online at the time of application.
Additionally, students must pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), which allows access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

Current IHS Fee: £776 per year of stay.

Transition to the New UK eVisa System

From 2026, the UK government will fully transition to a digital eVisa system for international students. This means:

  • Students will no longer receive physical vignette stickers or BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) cards.

  • Instead, visa details will be stored digitally and linked to the passport.

  • Students can access and share their visa status online through the UKVI digital account.

This move aims to streamline immigration control and make border entry faster and more secure for international students.

English Language and CAS Requirements

  • Applicants must receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from their university before applying for the visa.

  • Proof of English proficiency is mandatory. Most UK universities accept IELTS Academic or equivalent tests.

Pollster Education’s British Council Certified Counsellors guide students on university selection, CAS documentation, and preparing financial proof in compliance with UKVI standards.

Financial Documents Accepted by UKVI

To meet the financial requirement, students can provide:

  • Personal or parent/sponsor bank statements

  • Education loans from recognised financial institutions

  • Certificates of deposits (if acceptable under UKVI guidelines)

All financial documents must clearly show the account holder’s name, bank name, balance, and the 28-day maintenance period.

Key Points to Remember for 2026 Applicants

  • Apply for your visa up to 6 months before your course start date (if applying from outside the UK).

  • Ensure all documents are in English or officially translated.

  • Hold the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.

  • Submit your biometrics or confirm your identity via the UK Immigration: ID Check app if eligible.
