UK Student Visa Update: eVisas Replace Vignette Stickers (Effective from 15th July 2025)

The United Kingdom Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has made a significant change to the way student visas are issued for those applying to study in the UK. As of 15th July 2025, the UK government has transitioned from physical visa vignette stickers to digital eVisas for international students. This change is part of the UK's broader digital immigration strategy aimed at modernising border entry processes and improving security and efficiency.

What Has Changed?

Previously, successful applicants for a UK Student visa received a visa vignette sticker in their passport that was valid for 90 days, allowing them to enter the UK. Upon arrival, they would collect their Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) from a designated post office.

Starting 15th July 2025, this vignette sticker will be replaced entirely by a digital eVisa for most student applicants. This means that students will no longer receive a visa sticker in their passport.

Who Does This Apply To?

  • All student visa applications submitted online from 15th July 2025 will receive an eVisa instead of a vignette.

  • This applies to main applicants only.

  • Dependents and children accompanying the student will still receive both a physical vignette sticker and a digital eVisa.

What Is an eVisa?

An eVisa is a digital record of your immigration status that replaces the need for a physical sticker or card. It is linked to your passport electronically and can be accessed through the UKVI account you must create.

This transition aligns the UK with other modern immigration systems used globally and is aimed at reducing paperwork, fraud, and delays associated with physical documents.

What Should Students Do After Visa Approval?

1. Create a UKVI Account

All successful Student visa holders must create a UKVI account using the email address they used to apply for their visa.

2. Access Your eVisa

Log in to your UKVI account to view and download your eVisa. This document contains your immigration status, conditions of stay, and duration of your visa.

3. Print a Copy (Optional but Recommended)

Even though your visa is digital, it is advisable to carry a printed copy of your eVisa while travelling for easy reference during airport checks or university enrollment.

4. Link New Passports

If your passport expires or you receive a new one, you must update your UKVI account to link your eVisa to the new passport. Failure to do so may result in entry delays or rejections at the UK border.

Key Benefits of eVisa

  • No need to collect BRP cards or visit a post office after arrival.

  • Reduces dependency on physical documents.

  • Makes it easier to manage and update immigration records.

  • Simplifies re-entry to the UK for travel during course breaks.

  • Enhances security by preventing fraudulent duplication of vignette stickers.

Important Notes for Dependent Applicants

While main student visa applicants will receive only an eVisa, dependents and children will continue to receive both a vignette sticker and an eVisa. This dual process will continue until UKVI finalises the full transition to digital visas for all categories.
