Study in Germany: Best Student Accommodation Options in Germany

Study in Germany: Best Student Accommodation Options in Germany

Finding suitable accommodation is one of the most important steps for international students planning to Study in Germany. Where a student lives can influence monthly expenses, commuting time, social life, and overall university experience.

Germany offers several accommodation options, ranging from affordable student residences and shared apartments to private studios and temporary housing. However, demand for affordable accommodation can be particularly high in major university cities, so international students should begin their search as early as possible. The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) recommends starting the accommodation search as soon as a student's university place is confirmed.

As experienced Overseas Education Consultants in Mumbai, Pollster Education helps students understand accommodation choices, living costs, and practical considerations before beginning their Study Abroad journey.

1. Student Residences

Student residences, often managed by local Studierendenwerk organisations, are among the most popular accommodation options in Germany.

Students generally have a private bedroom while sharing facilities such as:

• Kitchen
• Bathroom
• Common areas
• Laundry facilities
• Study spaces

Student residences are often among the most affordable accommodation choices. DAAD reports that rooms in student service residences average around €280 per month, although prices vary considerably by city and residence.

Advantages

• Affordable compared with many private options
• Close to universities in many locations
• Opportunities to meet other students
• Suitable for international students

Considerations

Demand is high and places are limited. Students should apply as early as possible after receiving their university admission.

DAAD's accommodation finder currently lists more than 1,100 student residences across Germany, demonstrating the range of options available.

2. Wohngemeinschaft (WG) or Shared Apartment

A Wohngemeinschaft, commonly called a WG, is a shared apartment where students have their own bedroom but share the kitchen, bathroom, and sometimes a living room.

This is one of Germany's most popular housing arrangements. DAAD estimates that almost 30% of students live in shared accommodation.

Advantages

• Lower cost than renting an entire apartment
• Opportunity to live with German or international students
• Shared utility and internet costs
• Excellent way to build friendships
• Greater independence than a residence hall

For international students, living in a WG can also provide opportunities to practise German and understand everyday life in Germany.

3. Private Student Apartments

Private student residences are another option for students who want modern facilities and greater independence.

These properties may offer:

• Furnished rooms
• Private bathrooms
• Shared kitchens
• Study areas
• Fitness facilities
• Internet access
• Social spaces

Private residences can be more expensive than publicly supported student accommodation, but they may offer greater convenience and additional facilities.

Students should carefully compare what is included in the monthly rent before signing a contract.

4. Renting a Private Apartment

Students who prefer privacy can rent their own apartment or studio.

This option provides:

• Greater privacy
• Personal living space
• Flexible lifestyle
• No shared kitchen or bathroom

However, private accommodation is generally more expensive. Students may also need to provide additional documentation to demonstrate their ability to pay the rent. Depending on the landlord, this can include proof of enrolment, financial evidence, a scholarship confirmation, or a parental guarantee.

Students should also remember that apartments in Germany are often rented unfurnished, and some may not include a kitchen.

5. Temporary Accommodation

Students arriving in Germany before securing permanent accommodation can consider temporary options such as:

• Short-term furnished rooms
• Student sublets
• Hostels
• Guesthouses
• Temporary shared accommodation

This can provide a practical solution while searching for a long-term room or apartment.

International Offices and student service organisations may also be able to provide information about temporary accommodation.

Accommodation Costs in Germany

Accommodation costs vary significantly depending on the city, location, type of property, and facilities.

According to current DAAD guidance, students pay around €489 per month on average for accommodation, although prices can be considerably higher in major cities. DAAD notes that Munich, Frankfurt, Berlin, Freiburg, and Tübingen are among locations where affordable accommodation can be particularly difficult to find.

Germany's overall student living costs are generally estimated at around €900–€1,200 per month, depending on location and lifestyle. Accommodation is usually the largest component of a student's monthly budget.

Understanding German Rental Terms

International students should understand common rental terminology before signing a contract.

Understanding these terms helps students compare accommodation offers accurately.

Important Documents for Renting

Landlords may request several documents before approving a rental application.

Students may need:

• Passport
• University admission or enrolment confirmation
• Proof of financial resources
• Scholarship confirmation, if applicable
• Parental guarantee, where requested
• SCHUFA report, particularly in private rentals

Requirements vary between landlords and properties.

How to Find Student Accommodation

Students can search through:

• University International Offices
• Local Studierendenwerk organisations
• University accommodation portals
• Student residence databases
• WG accommodation platforms
• Private rental websites
• Student groups and notice boards

Students should never transfer money without verifying the property, landlord, contract, and payment details. Accommodation scams can target students searching urgently for housing.

Tips for Finding Accommodation

Students planning to Study in Germany should:

1. Start searching immediately after receiving admission.
2. Apply for student residences early.
3. Compare several accommodation options.
4. Check the distance from campus and public transport.
5. Understand whether utilities are included.
6. Check the deposit requirement.
7. Read the rental contract carefully.
8. Inspect the accommodation before signing whenever possible.
9. Keep copies of all documents and payment records.
10. Avoid suspicious offers requiring immediate payment.

Choosing the Right Accommodation

The best accommodation depends on a student's budget and lifestyle.

Students should consider both monthly rent and additional expenses before making a decision.
