Lost Passport Abroad: What to Do – A Guide for Study Abroad Students

Losing your passport in a foreign country can be stressful—especially if you're an international student. But don’t panic! With the right steps, you can quickly get back on track. Whether you're in the UK, USA, or any other country for your education, here’s a simple guide to help you through it.

1. Stay Calm & Retrace Your Steps

Before anything else, stay calm. Double-check your surroundings—hostel, café, library, or public transport—where you may have last seen it. If you're lucky, someone may have turned it in.

2. Report It to Local Authorities

Immediately file a lost/stolen passport report with the local police. This is important for:

  • Security reasons

  • Applying for a new passport or emergency travel document

  • Proof for your embassy or consulate

Get a copy of the police report—you’ll need it for the next steps.

3. Contact Your Country’s Embassy/Consulate

Visit or call the Indian Embassy or Consulate in your host country. They’ll guide you through:

  • Applying for an Emergency Certificate (if urgent travel is needed)

  • Applying for a new passport (if you’re staying longer)

Make sure to carry:

  • Police report

  • Passport copy (if available)

  • Proof of residence/student ID

  • Passport-size photos

4. Inform Your University and Immigration Office

If you're on a student visa, report the loss to your university’s international student office and the immigration authority (like UKVI in the UK or USCIS in the USA). They’ll assist with visa replacement and help avoid legal complications.

5. Apply for a Replacement Visa

If your student visa was stamped in the lost passport, you’ll need to apply for a replacement visa. Visit the immigration department’s website and follow the steps provided. Often, your embassy or university will help.

6. Update Important Records

Once you receive your new passport and visa:

  • Update your university records

  • Inform your bank

  • Update your student health insurance provider

  • Notify your student housing office

7. Prevent It From Happening Again

  • Keep digital and photocopies of your passport

  • Store it in a safe, secure place

  • Avoid carrying it unless absolutely necessary

  • Use a passport holder or money belt while traveling
