What is the TB Test Requirement for the UK?

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires a Tuberculosis test if you are:

  • Coming to the UK for more than 6 months, AND

  • Living in a country where TB is common

This includes most countries in South Asia, Africa, and parts of Latin America and Eastern Europe.


Who Must Take the TB Test?

You must take the test if you are applying from any of the UK Home Office’s listed countries, such as:

  • India

  • Nigeria

  • China

  • Ghana

  • Nepal

  • South Africa

    (And many more)

    Important: If you have lived in a non-listed country for at least 6 months continuously and are applying from there, you may not need the test.


Who Is Exempt from the TB Test?

You do not need a TB test if:

  • You're coming to the UK for less than 6 months

  • You’re a returning UK resident

  • You're applying from a country not on the TB test list

  • You're under 11 years old (though you still may need a medical certificate)


How to Book a TB Test for the UK Visa

The UK only accepts TB test results from approved clinics in each country. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Find an Approved Clinic

  • You must book your test at a UKVI-approved clinic.

2. Book Your Appointment

  • Contact the clinic via phone/email.

  • Some clinics have online booking systems.

3. Bring Required Documents

  • Valid passport

  • Government-issued ID

  • Any previous medical records, if applicable


What Happens During the TB Test?

  • You will undergo a chest X-ray to detect signs of TB.

  • If the result is unclear, you may be asked to do a sputum test.

  • Children under 11 may not require an X-ray but will need a medical examination.


How Long Does It Take to Get the Results?

  • You will typically get the TB clearance certificate within 24–48 hours.

  • In some cases, if additional tests are required, it may take up to 10 days.


Validity of the TB Certificate

  • The TB test certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of issue.

  • You must submit your UK visa application while the certificate is still valid.
