GENERAL OVERVIEW OF IELTS


LISTENING TEST

Common for Academic & General Training

  1. Sections in the Listening test – 4
  2. Total questions – 40
  3. Number of times test taker hear the recording – ONCE only
  4. Duration of test – 30 + 10 mins
    1. 30 mins – Hear the recording and simultaneously answer the questions on question paper
    2. 10 mins – To transfer the answer on the actual answer paper

 

READING TEST

Academic

  1. Sections in the Reading test – 3
  2. Texts ranges from descriptive & factual to discursive & analytical
  3. Includes non-verbal material such as diagrams, chart or illustrations
  4. Total questions – 40
  5. Duration of test – 1 hour

No extra time given for transferring the answer to answer sheet

General Training

  1. Sections in Reading test – 3
    1. Section 1 – 2 or 3 short factual texts
    2. Section 2 – 2 short, work-related or factual texts
    3. Section 3 – 1 large text on general topic
  2. Total questions – 40
  3. Duration of test – 1 hour

No extra time given for transferring the answer to answer sheet

 

WRITING TEST

Academic

  1. Sections/Tasks in the Writing test – 2
    1. Task-1
      1. Total number of words – 150
      2. Time allotted – 20 mins
      3. Task is to summarise, describe or explain a table, graph, chart or a diagram
    2. Task-2
      1. Total number of words – 250
      2. Time allotted – 40 mins
      3. Short essay on any familiar topic
  2. Duration of test – 1 hour (20 + 40 mins for Task 1 & Task 2 respectively)

General Training

  1. Sections/Tasks in the Writing test – 2
    1. Task-1
      1. Total number of words – 150
      2. Time allotted – 20 mins
      3. Task is to write a letter on familiar situations in daily life
    2. Task-2
      1. Total number of words – 250
      2. Time allotted – 40 mins
      3. Short essay on any familiar topic
  2. Duration of test – 1 hour (20 + 40 mins for Task 1 & Task 2 respectively)

 

SPEAKING TEST

Common for Academic & General Training

Face to face interview with the examiner

  1. Sections in the test – 3
    1. Section 1 – General questions on familiar topic (work, culture, holidays…)
    2. Section 2 – A 2-minute monologue on the topic chosen by examiner
      1. Prep. Time – 1-min before monologue
    3. Section 3 – Abstract discussions based on section 2
  2. Duration of test – 11-14 min
